Employment at the Library

Library Student Assistants

During the Fall and Spring academic semesters, the Library & Gallery employs approximately 100 UMBC students. During the Summer and January sessions, we ordinarily employ about 30 students. Applications for employment are accepted year-round at the Library Administrative Offices, room 353, or through our online job application form.

Library Student Assistants must be current UMBC undergraduate or graduate students. You do not need to have a Federal Work Study Award or be receiving other financial aid to qualify. (Work Study students: please consult your financial aid counselor about the terms and limits of your aid. There may be a limit on the amount of paid work you can do each semester.)

Pay Rates

Student Assistants are paid minimum wage, a rate of $ per hour. There are some Student Assistant positions for which special technical training or skills are needed. Such work is paid at higher hourly rates depending on the skills required and degree of responsibility.

At the end of each semester, all Student Assistants are considered for further raises of $0.25 per hour on the basis of written evaluations by the supervisor. Such raises are not automatic. Raises reward sustained performance of exceptionally fine work and indicate our expectation that the fine work will continue. Unfortunately, the Library's budgets cannot support merit raises for all assistants.
